A small bit of added context; Maeda Ume is a character from Tanaka Hiroshi's sort-of-spinoff of the Bad Boys anthology, Bakugyaku Famiglia, set all the way in Tokyo (as the author thought it would increase the chances of a live-action adaptation of his work, which it actually pulled off with a live-action film being made).
His attachment to sex dolls begins there. In the previous chapter, the three framed photographs on the wall in the picture of his... "family" are some of the partners he had in that manga, all (I believe, not sure about the rightmost one) named Saori. The first Saori befalls an unfortunate fate at the hands of one of the manga's main characters, Tetsu, which I'll post below. He's then gifted a replacement as an apology, who is... "alive"(???) in the final chapter of Bakugyaku Famiglia, but must have... "passed away"(???) at some point in the years between then and KIPPO.

What’s the lore behind Megumi no Oni and Bakugyaku Famiglia ? I’ve been wondering how they fit in the overall series

What’s the lore behind Megumi no Oni and Bakugyaku Famiglia ?

Megami no Oni takes place before Bad Boys and focuses on somewhat relevant groups to the make-up of Hiroshima's delinquent world, quite a bit more serious than Bad Boys and closer to something like KIPPO, just gets a bit more extreme in parts. Bakugyaku Famiglia is set in the same universe, but takes place all the way in Tokyo and is unrelated to anything from the main series for its entire run. It becomes relevant to the rest of the series here in KIPPO, mostly close to the end.
