The charm was that it started as a gag manga, and when it got popular they started milking it out by making it too serious something it never was.

This probably happened later in time, after class, with Otaku going ahead to pick up twintails and escort her home like she described in the comic. Gyaru was just staying behind humoring the other students until it was time for her to go; thus, she, Otaku, and twintails cross paths.
