I'm aware the test was rigged for the princess to fail. That's why I don't understand why the principal allowed her to pass after she clearly broke the rules. He got what he wanted but turned it away, which doesn't make sense.
He'd have to admit to cheating. If he does he's boned.

Then there would've been no point for him to rig the test, lol.
He rigged the test so she would fail. She didn't fail so he couldn't just not let her pass. Despite her destroying the targets which anyone can confirm they would then need to know why she wasnt permitted to do the second test. An investigation would unfold and show that he put up an anti magic field. Where he would be exposed for putting the anti magic field up. Therefore he had to pass her.

Where he fails is that she would have used her regular magic had he not erected an anti magic field. This is why he's surprised in the second test because he assumed she was just a muscle head.

The thing about cheating is that if you dont get caught you get no consecuences but with her asking him to clarify that specific situation he couldnt backpedal and fail her because it would be clear that he rigged the contest, and the King might have more than words with him for his actions unbecoming of a headmaster.

She literally cornered him and she did something so outrageous while following the rules stated by him to the letter even to the point of asking him to clarify an specific situation that he was unable to wriggle out of the situation and fail her

He cant put an impossible test, the most he can do is up the difficulty as much as he can but if despite that she still manages to pass the test he has no way to fail her

My hot take is that Drills will begrudgingly do the promised naked handstand and find out she really likes it! Her inner musclehead awakens. And probably a fetish, 'cause manga.

I think she's the type of ojousama to go through with her decisions. Like, the kind who'll absolutely do a naked handstand even if the whole world tries to stop her.

I read it. She was asking for clarification about leaving the marked-off area, not about the range between her and the target. Correction, she ran and then jumped.

Maintaining the initial range was a requirement based on his statement, "destroy the target from this range". Otherwise, there was no need for him to mention range, nor for her to use a running jump.
No maintain the initial range wasn't a requirement. Pay close attention to the scene. She is actually not told "stay in the circle" If you look close in the wording, she is told stay OUTSIDE the circle. The circle is around the targets. And yes his INITIAL statement implies a range restriction, but the clarification he makes changes the implied rules so that "It's okay for your body to pass the line as long as you do not STEP into the circle."

(Both her and him say "if I go outside" but if you look at the imagery you can clearly see the sad circle is around the targets and no where else.)

Now is that what he meant? Maybe not, but that is what he SAID. He can not then tell her "No you can't go past the line" when she specifically asked if she could and he said "It's okay as long as you don't 'step' past it."

Another thing you have to pay attention to, is they move before she starts. Page 12 panel 1 the line is between them, panel 3 it isn't. So the fact that she is running does not mean she crossed the line, because they have both moved, likely further away from the line since she has room to run.

This is like in basketball, if you run to the 3point line and jump, from behind the line, but drift in air past it, and shoot, it's still a 3, because you did not step past the line yet, your last 'step (a jump) was from behind the line. By telling her limbs don't count only steps do, it became possible to jump to the target. If he said "as long as your torso doesn't pass the line" she wouldn't have been able to jump, but he specifically said step.

And the reason he can't go back on his word is he will lose ALL his reputation and possibly even be put in prison if word gets out he LIED to the PRINCESS on her test.

She failed the test when she didn't maintain the required range.

His rigging of the test was actually a plausible means to test one's magic. So, it wouldn't even be considered cheating.

She didn't corner him in any way, assuming the translation was correct (which I strongly suspect was not). He could easily fail her for failing to "destroy the target from this range." It's irrefutable, as the range in which she destroyed the target and the range in which she began the test were different.

According to the translation, range was a requirement ("destroy the target from this range"). Page 12 shows her inside the circle with the targets.

The only plausible explanation for how she passed the test is that the translation was wrong. He likely should've said, 'Use any means necessary, and destroy the target without leaving this area.' That would align with her confirming what exactly constitutes leaving said area. This way, no test requirements were broken, and everything makes sense.
