I like this literal down-to-earth setting. The original series had interesting ideas with the socio-economic disparities in the students backgrounds, but that was mostly lost in the backdrop of a space shadow conflict with mechas, which made most of the student conflicts look so petty and an afterthought. But here, we can focus on the school hierarchy and conflicts, without it looking so childish and unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
