I assumed the story would either avoid the subject of the father (since it's bound to be controversial) or come up with some bullshit to make it so MC was the dad after all.

Instead, they not only confirmed he existed and wasn't MC, but also hinted there was something odd going on. Not to mention making him play a big part in the emotional conflict of the story.

I was only half interested on this and mostly following to get a laugh at the comment section meltdowns, but now they got me invested.

tbh, i still don't get why she broke up with him, and not only that but broke ALL further communication channels with him, too. That hasn't really been explained well, imo. Her parents got a divorce, she freaked out and left... I just don't think that's enough to stay 15 years on radio silence with, as was shown, a fairly good and loving relationship. "Japanese people be like that" is the only reasonable explanation for her behaviour. Although i do not remember if it was ever told that he looked for her at some point.

The implication is that something was going on, related to her parents' divorce. I imagine that first of all, her parents splitting up meant she didn't have anyone able to pay for her to continue going to university. She had mentioned needing to get a job in the near future, as well. And given he was focused on his artwork and already busy, I think part of it was in fact not wanting to burden him with her problems. We do also get some implications that he might have also been emotionally neglectful, like when she had to eat his ice cream to get him to finally look up from his notepad. I get the feeling that he didn't truly articulate just how much she means to him, and it played a role in everything that happened. Especially with the way she could say so easily- and so dejectedly- that "he wouldn't" come out and say he loves her.

It was mentioned a few chapters ago that he didn't really go out of his way to look, to the point that until she showed up at his doorstep he had no way of knowing for certain that she was still alive. As for her end, I think that after the breakup and whatever was going on with her family, she and her eventual husband bonded over... whatever it was, given it apparently connected the two of them. And then he ends up dying (in an accident IIRC) before Minori is born, suddenly leaving her as a single mother. So she had to devote herself entirely to her daughter's wellbeing and happiness, which we see persists even into the common day where Minori is her one and only priority even though she clearly still has feelings for the MC.

There's still some vaguery going on that the author isn't quite ready to reveal yet (still betting 50/50 right now that there's a Musume Janakute Mama ga Suki nano!? situation going on, I wouldn't care either way but it definitely feels like the author is playing at it) but I appreciate that they're letting the story be complicated and messy and not letting these two patch their damages about their breakup up with neat little bows.

This is a sweet little relaxing series, yet it feels honest and messy.

Surprisingly, I appreciate and really like the fact that they aren't being open and communicating properly like they probably should be.
Usually I'd hate the miscommunications and misunderstandings, but this series just feels so much more adult and well-reasoned that the 'calm drama' is something I'm really liking.
But it also seems like they're growing and getting more honest and open with each other, or at least they're going to, which helps.

Adult life is rife with excuses and priorities and secrets, yet it doesn't feel melodramatic or as pointless as the excuses and priorities and secrets of teenagers.
Instead, it feels reasonable and grounded, which I feel this manga absolutely nails.

After all those years, just her and Minori, she is scared of starting a relationship... especially since this relationship in particular would be a restart.

I think she still feels some ashamed for just breaking up with him, couple that with how she just popped back into his life... she is an airhead, but Kyou is not an idiot, nor a bad person.

We will need a confirmation... but I think she doesn't have anyone from either her or her late husband's family to count on, and that was since before Minori's birth.

Whatever happened in the divorce of her parents was heavy stuff, and probably really tore apart her family, considering I think she met her late husband during those events, and he felt the need to share in the difficult time with her... things must not have been pretty.

I feel like Kyou got SA’d. It could explain the sudden break up, vagueness about the father and his family, and her having to drop out. Just the time frame doesn’t add up and the fact that they “met” after she broke up with him. Maybe it’s the same guy and he saw her again at work. Hopefully we get a chapter that goes in depth about the father.
