The monster is a secret boss called Jotun, the Saint Eater. VERY high chance that is the corpse of a previous saint or an amalgamation of previous saints it consumed in the past. No idea why the body form still exists somewhere in its own body, maybe by preserving the corpse it taps into their power to give it some kind of holy magic resistance or something.

Either way, although it wasn’t outright stated, the monster was getting more grotesque throughout the chapter, creating more eyes, the original mask deforming, etc, so I’m assuming if Iks didn’t blitz the thing with that inferno silver sword, it would’ve gone to a phase II, i.e. stronger.

None of this is outright stated, but I’m a HUGE fan of mangaka that do a “show, don’t tell” way of illustration and portrayal, and this mangaka did a fantastic job this fight.
