Like when they were talking about how expensive it is and she's just "Just go farm dungeons for a bit if you need the money" shows she doesn't really grasp the importance of preparation; what happens if you can't go farming because of the status effect lady.
I took that more as her being super rich so she can't relate to the poors who can't easily farm up a couple million yen in an afternoon.

I went back to refresh on how she's portrayed. I wouldn't call her a meathead but she is pretty consistently shown to be arrogant about her abilities so maybe she was just being arrogant here. I still don't think it's good story progression because it makes her look really stupid and unreliable. Honestly the best twist would be that she actually bought up all the dispel items ahead of time and this going to shops to find its sold out was just a ruse to force her lackluster but talented party to push ahead in the dungeon.

I wonder whether Dispel potion scarcity is just a throwaway moment or a foreshadowing of something to comes.

While the brainwashing development seemed lame/disappointing/contrived, there is theoretically a way this could be redeemed and turn out to be smarter writing than it appears:

  • From the way those he previously tamed reacted, it seemed like those that are lower level than him at time of taming become more robotic, and aside from the delay, those that are higher level retained more self (the boss's reaction post-domination, compared to his underlings). The boss seemed to keep his personality completely intact despite only a few level's difference.
  • The swordswoman has clearly stated goals (conquer the dungeons) and seems single-mindedly fixated on them, and is aware that the protagonist doesn't share her goals and has no motivation or drive to become that strong.
  • She could also theoretically be aware, if she conversed with the blacksmith offscreen about him, that the protagonist is a bit innocent and easily flustered. She might also be aware of his actions saving the girl/defeating that gang. So, she could reasonably know he's "a trustworthy, good guy" that wouldn't take advantage of her.
  • From this: It's entirely plausible that she's actually hamming it up, intentionally trying to make him feel guilty and creating a reason for him to become more powerful, "to cure her" ("damn this item is out of stock everywhere for some reason hm weird lol guess you guys have to level up and be the strongest lol")

(unfortunately, the final pages of the chapter instantly killed any remaining hope I had for quality writing)

That's a hamfisted development if I've ever seen one... I get that using the domination skill on an attractive woman is part of the power fantasy, but it feels like the author both wasn't willing to fully commit and let the MC be a bad person or come up with a good reason for him to do it.

Instead it's just "Oops, I accidentally made her completely mine!" and every store just so happens to not have the needed item and the party circumstances mean they won't be getting the item anytime soon either even though they could. Ahaha, oops, just have to have a hot slave that insists on calling me master because of how her skill works. Silly world we live in.

Also, maybe it's just a translation thing, but I don't see why being commanded to be absolutely obedient would make you want to be ordered around. It would make you follow orders, but why would it make you want it? Just feels like more forced fetish material.

Very much so.
I like it that the MC is not the type to "enslave and dominate" others willy nilly like a complete psycho scumbag, but this chapter juts makes it seem like the author / editors still had a kink going on, and wanted to go for it anyway.
That swordswoman was one short step away from going: "Dominate me, Daddy, do it! I want it!", ffs... <_<

It reminds me of the criticism of white-washing anime protagonists of any moral consequence, when they let a villain (who'd obviously take bloody revenge) get away, but then have that villain die anyway.
You maintain your hero's morality and good image, but the villain still dies. Win-win, surely.
As you said, hamfisted.

The least fetish driven writing in fantasy / isekai i guess. They always find a way to keep the slavery intact. EVERY shop is out of the required item. A dispel stone, which i assume should be as common as a health potion, is suddenly out of stock everywhere.
