So far, the manga is not shit but it also isn't peak, it's a solid 7.
The manga was interesting from the jump, but I initially hated Mori because he was your typical gloomy genius MC (how unoriginal). After revealing his past my perception of Mori has shifted, he is a traumatized man who acts selflessly. The same shift of character is shown with Miyamoto as well, He appeared to be a bully jock but in reality, he is just passionate about Climbing and it's this passion that makes him Intimidating to others (He is really just a softie). We see this switch up AGAIN with Kurosawa. The characters aren't baseless cliche's, they are imperfect people who do what they think is right by acting selflessly. This AUTOMATICALLY discredits the manga from being MID.
I kinda understand why people rank this manga highly. Only in chapter 29 the mangaka presents a recurring theme in this manga: selfishness.
Is it ok to value your own desires over others? Mori is torturing himself by being gloomy and running away since he is trying to be selfless. He replays scenes of that fateful day when the student committed suicide, a selfish action which haunted Mori to Never be selfish. Miyamoto's selflessness was positive (unlike Mori's way to go about selflessness) when he set aside his passion for Climbing and offered to help Mori. When being Selfless you open new opportunities for you and everyone else (the Climbing Club was formed, Miyamoto made a new friend, Mori was going to start window cleaning) but at the same time you always end up losing (Miyamoto's selfless action of defending Yumi lead him to suspension). In the end you can only achieve true happiness by being Selfish, but when doing so you end up hurting others which doesn't make you happy. Miyamoto abandons Yumi to climb in France. A selfish action that will for sure haunt him given the fact that they were childhood sweethearts. Yumi was selfish to cry in public, disregarding others resulting in Miyamoto ruining his high school life.
Reiko-san was selfless when cutting the rope to save Kurosawa, but it was selfish to leave him with trauma and to leave him alive. Reiko's selfless action left her dead. If she didn't decide to be a hero both Reiko and Kurosawa would die with dignity and they would be honored.
Instead Kurosawa lived, he probably felt wrong to say the truth (survivors guilt) and acted selflessly making HIM look like the villian who broke the bond when it was really Reiko. I will say that it was dumb when Kurosawa said that there isnt a difference between him cutting and Reiko cutting (One is an act of selfishness the other is selflessness).
TLDR: Acting Selflessly opens opportunities but makes you lose if you over do it. Acting Selfishly makes you comfortable, but you lose everyone around you. You lose either way. Maybe there is a limit on HOW selfish or selflessly you can act to unlock true happiness but only in chapter 29, the mangaka hasn't fully delved in that topic yet.
Note, I gathered ALL THIS BY CHAPTER 29 GNG. There is 170 chapters in this manga, we are only 17% in this manga (WE ARE STILL IN THE EXPOSISION BROKSI?!?!?). I am certain that this theme of Selfishness will only be bolstered the more we read.
I will say though, the twist WAS kinda asspull, and it should've been done in a more refined way. STILL NOT A SHIT MANGA THO. it's a 7/10 rn.

there's much better manga that actually start off great and get into things, not taking multiple fucking volumes to do basic setup, and they get fucking axed because the world is unfair, but Baki the Climber gets to be mid for like 5 volumes and be fine? see, unfair as fuck
although gotta say, in the months since first reading this chapter I kinda started liking the twist
