Yeah - the more I read, the more I can see why some don't like Lillian, but

I dig her. She's remarkably consistent the whole way through, and her motives are honestly understandable, and she's as much a product of Alfred's treatment of her as anything else.

She simply wanted to be by his side and for him to focus on her. He made a conscious decision to ignore her, pursue his obsession with pirates, and we see in this very chapter that he effectively abandoned her, and then expected her to simply wait around for him while he went gallivanting about at sea chasing his own demons.
I don't really fault her for not sitting still. That's never been in her character, and she's willful enough to simply go out and grasp at what she wants - namely, Alfred. And if the only thing he seems to care about is pirates, well.

Becoming a pirate makes logical sense, at that point.

This reads like a tragic love story more than anything. Alfred has this static image of his "childhood friend" and he just assumes she'll meekly do what he says and sit and wait like a pet. Alfred even tries to "throw her a bone" in this chapter with his "I'll take some shore leave and we can hang out for a couple days", like he's doing her this favor - and he's missing the point of what she wants, even as she spells it out for him.
He's not "underestimating" her. He's just not actually seeing her, and that's on him.

Thanks for the TL work. Looking forward to seeing if this ends up with one dead at the other's hands.

I really have low hopes of them ending up together. Just don't kill one of them in the end.

That sorta assumes there's zero chance they have the capacity to continue growing and changing, though.
Their conflict isn't irreconcilable, but it will require work and effort on the part of them both.

Wait, did she got raped?
Her being attacked with no details beyond the bandaged aftermath was vague enough to make it seem like a real possibility, but hard to say. The fact she seems to be a noble woman running around playing pirate with no mention of a fiance or marriage leans that way. Might need a tragedy tag on this one.

The more i read it, the darker it goes.. Alfred true intention was to protect his childhood friend but i think he's forgotten his true intention and continues to pursue pirates instead, ignoring Lily when she's being completely honest about wanting his attention, Alfred probably doesn't know how lonely Lily was deep down, Imagine you were being left alone by your only friend, you were waiting for your friend to come back and even got attacked by some random person? Then when you meet again, your friend become a different person with their own obsession, completely ignoring you..

this is why you shouldn't ignore your cute childhood friends. This is an important moral lesson in today's trying times of people not marrying their childhood friends.

Yeah seeing how he literally abandoned her to go fight pirates and fuck off and treats her like nothing but a pet he will play with occasionally is really her motivation - to the extreme that she will go against him. She's mentally unwell for sure, but I agree - her motivations make sense for her. I'm sure we'll hear all about how he's doing all this to protect her and such.

Al's already stated that he went off to fight pirates to protect Lily.
But he's oblivious to the fact that in "protecting her", he's also actively "losing her".

And as I said initially - I think one sticking point that will factor into the narrative between them, is that Al has always failed to see Lily for who she is, and has always failed to understand what it is she wants from him and for them both. And that's with her telling him, repeatedly - but he just ...doesn't hear it.

As for the "mentally unwell" line that's been getting thrown around for the last couple of chapters - I push back against it because I don't think it's substantiated thus far.
She's energetic, she's got a childish streak even into young adulthood, but calling her "mentally ill" feels like a lazy writing-off of her character when we're still getting everything established in how she's gotten to where she has, over the years that were skipped between the first chapter and what's followed.
It's easy to say "bitch be crazy", but it's dismissive and unfair, this early in.

If the narrative itself portrays that she's actually insane or something, then I'll amend my judgment in light of that added context - but until then, I think it's premature and, honestly, a little problematic to just label the female lead in light of that.

It’s a pity that Lily was raped she certainly won’t be allowed to marry Alfred anymore. :(
Perhaps at the end of the story Alfred will marry someone else
Lily will be sentenced to be hanged for being a pirate. :((

Bro, this manga is set in the 18th century, so anyone who became a pirate would be hanged. I’m commenting on the historical reality, and most importantly, don’t accuse someone of misogyny or discrimination just because you don’t like their comment

"Bro", you just outright assumed Lillian was raped, then went on to assume that meant she was ...I guess "tainted"(???) and that Alfred would have nothing to do with her and would just marry someone else while she was hanged?

Try and couch it in "but muh historical accuracy" -- which, point me the chapter where it says this is historically set to a specified time period and region analogous to our world, I'll wait -- but really, you made baseless assumptions and then predicted a bad ending for the girl while "I guess the guy will just marry someone else" like it's nothing.

Maybe don't get mad at someone's comment calling you out if you're gonna be half-assed with your contribution to the thread.

It'd have been way better if she really was some violent badass pirate captain, and they had the whole enemies to lovers thing. Feel like the author wants to have her cake and eat it too by making her not be that, but also play off the tropes of them being on opposing sides.

If Lily was a "violent badass pirate captain", Al would just put her down.

There'd be no nuance to their dynamic to create an enemies>>lovers story arc, because the concept of "Pirates" is anathema to Al's worldview.

Plus - we're only 5 chapters in, and the end of this chapter does sort of foreshadow that Lily's arc isn't going to remain this mischevious & rambunctious, but otherwise largely innocent young woman who's simply "playing pirate".

Thanks for the chapter :D

I would have believed Lily if she wasn't mostly lying. Al fell for it way too easily... Although she claims to have been acting a role the entire time for Al's attention, she was definitely not just acting.

She escaped the merchant ship with another pirate – the black-haired man. She got shot by Al and felt happy because of it. She even tried to shoot Al to tell him that she is a real pirate... Either some parts of her story about innocently walking onto a pirate ship were fabricated, or she is mentally warped to a degree. Honestly, a mixture of both seems most likely to me, since sane people probably would not be willing to taking a bullet for the bit...

Al, on the other hand, acted really questionably this chapter. This is no longer being dense: we are now in the territory of simply being unwilling to care about Lily because he prioritizes other things first. Lily said exactly what she wanted, and he did not listen.

Yeah nah, I don't care about this Lillian motivation. Bitch is just mad selfish as fuck, so she would rather continue being a pirate just to gain Alfred's attention. Bitch the very reason why Al is so dead set on his mission is because your dumbass self get kidnapped by pirates in the past. Jesas what a selfish idiot
