Selective breeding plays a huge part in our modern-day food. The bananas we eat nowadays are almost completely different from wild bananas. Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and collard greens are all the same species of plant that has been selectively bred for different parts over hundreds of years. They don't exist naturally in nature.

This is a take I like. More often than not in isekai mangas, the protagonist will cook traditional Japanese food and EVERYONE who eats it will think it's the most delicious thing that has ever existed and can never be topped by any cuisine ever for the rest of time. This has never made sense to me as I don't really like Japanese food. As a Westerner, my tastes are more in line with isekai residents as they are more often than not given roots that are more European like than Asian. If given the choice between a traditional Japanese meal, like fish and rice, or a North American one, like bacon and eggs, I'd go with the American one every time.
Kudos to the author who recognized that the food we know in our world today is the result of years of selective breeding of crops and animals to get the flavors and nutrients that they have now.

The only manga that I believe can be excused for the whole "Japanese food is supreme in another world" trope is Isekai Nonbiri Nouka. The protagonist has a literal divine tool that lets him grow whatever crops he wants without needing seeds. The tool interprets what he remembers food to taste like and it grows like that, skipping the selective breeding process altogether.

A lot of isekai manga aimed toward women has them cooking a variety of Earth food too not only japanese stuff.

FINALLY!!! My second biggest pet peeve with isekais has been addressed magnificently! Theres no fucking reason why everyone should love japanese cuisine, its a whole other world, dammit!! You go to another world and learn their culture, not the other way around...

Based author, easily top 3 isekai slow life mangas out there.

I mean it's still missing the fact that Rice as food is older than Japan and there's no reason for it to not already exist in 99% of Isekai Manga.

Because it's written by a Japanese person, and they have a weird innate sense of superiority about themselves. They'll write how Japanese food is SO good it overwrites your very SOUL so you are unable to enjoy anything but Japanese food for the rest of your life, and also impose upon you a great despair that you will never be a glorious Japanese, just a simple gaijin who has been enlightened by the superior people.

From all the Asia food, the Jp one is one of the most "mid" there is lol
their food is pretty .... one note? A lots of flavor can be narrow down to soy sauce and/or mirin flavor. So it's usually a bit sweet and a bit salty.

They weirdly doesn't lend themselves into the bold flavor like the rest of ASIA.

every story I read, whether they're american comics, japanese manga, or webcomics from any other country, they all have a habit of glazing their home country. it's so funny to notice :lul:

reincarnated as a slime had the mc do a lot of cross breeding to get the rice right and then used a skill to optimize results to get it closest to what he remembered but it still wasn’t as popular with the public as other variations

Well even in our world, rice only grew in a pretty localized part of Asia for most of history. And if it needs to be crossbred to be truly editable, other options might’ve been preferable

My favorite is the gamer, a Korean web comic where a god literally says something like, of course you can save the world. You’re Korean. It wasn’t a one off either. The characters regularly talked about how awesome it was to be Korean

Africa had rice about 3000 years ago, Japanese isles about 4500 years ago, some theories say rice has been in europe for 2300~~ years (about 330 BCE thank to Alexander the Great) but was definitely there since the 700s (so very early in the middle age, most Isekai setting are middle/late middle age)

While that's not as old as Ancient China's culture it's actually infuriating how all these mangaka think they're the food messiah introducing Rice to everyone.

I'm still dreaming of the day where isekai resident going: "it's RAW, you f*king donkey!!! You're going to kill someone!", Gordon Ramsay style, about Japanese sashimi.
I Shall Survive Using Potions! kinda does that lol, in chapter 40 Kaoru is in a seaside town and asks for sashimi but the chef refuses cause it's unsafe, she later asks permission to the innkeeper to use his kitchen so she can make it herself but he refuses cause if shit happens his reputation gets ruined

Chapter 41 continues on that, she decides to make the sashimi herself so she creates a bracelet that will vibrate if it detects anything harmful in the fish, she can also use it to disintegrate harmful things on the fish, the entire fish gets erased though :v

I think that's literally the only time I've seen a isekai actually show that raw fish is dangerous and people in that world know that too

Btw, rice in Japan is literally treated as a main dish by older generations.

Idea being. You have rice as the core of a meal, and then some soup, fish etc as side dishes. That's how things like the Furikake index developed as economic markers.

It's crazy to me, because I live in Tokyo. I have the rice. Shits bland. It's just...rice.

Don't get me wrong, I love Japanese food and they do subtle flavours well, but often it can sleep too subtle, to the point of blandness.

You forgot carrots. Wild carrots are not orange IIRC.

Wait till you read Gourmet Gaming. Minhyuk cooks basically only korean food.

You’d be surprised at the amount of mangas that had the MC cook mainly the author’s food preferences. It’s like…i dunno…they’re written by very hungry humans looking to eat their comfort food…
