Naoi ditching work to come to Kurumi's aid kinda says it all. I was initially surprised that Kudou didn't put up more of a fight, but I think Naoi's words--and I do mean words, because for once it wasn't her fists--hit hardest and in the least-expected way.
Kudou had built up this image of an apathetic, violent, reclusive Naoi, and let that define their entire relationship via her own past trauma of being excluded and ignored. Changing herself into a social butterfly with the rest of the class might have given her actual meaning and fulfillment, if only it weren't for all the blame she puts on Naoi for "turning out the way she has".
And that's kind of tragic. Remove Naoi and Kudou's obsession with her from the equation, and it seems like she should have had everything she wants--friends, recognition, attention. But Naoi remained a fixed point for her, and she held them both in place, denying either the chance to grow past the issues and troubles they had before.
Kurumi coming in saves Naoi, and in a twist of fate, probably Kudou as well. She was left alone in the woods, crying and mourning for what she probably thinks is a return to who she was.
But the moment she comes back to class...well, they all still know her for the face she wore around them. They might still very well accept her with open arms, should she return to school; and I wonder if that will be Kudou's "finale": she retains her friendships and reputation that she'd crafted, but loses Naoi - and with Naoi, that abusive & traumatic link to her past self.
With Mine returning against all expectations, I imagine the final chapter will see Isanuma confronting her, and Mine playing the victim for the rest of the classroom. Mine might have done all of this for Isanuma; there's every reason to believe she's fixated on her friend, and like Kudou with Naoi, is seeking to "isolate" her to a degree, making Isuname dependent on her, and forging their relationship on her own controlling terms.
Mine being quiet and calculating as she is, I do wonder if we'll get a similar exposition in the next volume as we did with Kudou; we know that Kudou was outcast, and then abused by Naoi--and that's how she became who she is. So Mine might get a similar situation, in the sense that her past informs why she is the way she is now, rather than "she's just quirky like that". Everyone seems to have reasons for their characterization and behavior thus far, so no reason to believe that won't continue with Mine.
I kinda expect Naoi's "debut" will be next volume as well, alongside Mine & Isanuma's story. They'll likely intertwine, and with the Naoi and Kurumi on nominal good terms again, I think their relationship will start to expand and grow--even if Naoi is hesitating on answering Kurumi's confession, they'll be spending more time together now, and likely in a less-unhealthy fashion than before.
With Kimura the Library Girl showing up, though--it's prime time for some rivalry/hurt feelings & good ol' fashioned Yuri Triangles. Naoi not responding yet to Kurumi means the door's open for uncertain feelings and misunderstandings, and with how violent this series is in general, that means the misunderstands will be less "haha" and more "uh oh".
The festival is in full-swing, Naoi is redeemed, Mine is lurking below the surface of Isanuma's social strife in the wake of the teacher's antics, Kurumi might be getting back to the forefront of the class and her old responsibilities, and the characters will all converge again with new dynamics and new problems on the horizon.
And, hopefully, some actually nice and loving moments between our Main Two.
Can't wait for next month. Thanks for the TL.
