As someone who was in his position but tried to make it work for a couple years, this was not the fun feelgood decision but it was the correct decision. If the romance from one side is just a performance and the other person pretends not to notice then there's no way to have an actual honest conversation and bottling that shit up is just going to make the inevitable breakdown much worse.
