Even American astronauts prefer the metric system
iirc, there was a martian lander that crashed because it was a joint operation between the US and I want to say China? And someone forgot to convert to metric (or vice versa). So the parachutes/stopping mechanism were supposed to deploy at some height, and ended up not deploying at all before it hit the ground.

Edit: I was mostly right, there was a component provided by Lockheed Martin that was calibrated for Imperial Units instead of Metric Units and the NASA component it interfaced with was calibrated for Metric: "Specifically, software that calculated the total impulse produced by thruster firings produced results in pound-force seconds. The trajectory calculation software then used these results – expected to be in newton-seconds (incorrect by a factor of 4.45)[2] – to update the predicted position of the spacecraft."

So the reports received by NASA on the crafts position in the atmosphere was way off and it got too low while Aerobraking and was believed to have been ripped apart by the denser atmosphere at that elevation.

Everyone says they are “whimsy” and “creative” yet they all suddenly become callous when it comes to measurements; they prefer the easily calculable and STANDARDIZED ways of the metric system. And refuse to acknowledge the inherent, though frustrating, whimsy of the imperial system.

Why say,“ in 100 meters” when you can say, “in a dozen or so yards” or say commonly known short hands such as a “bakers dozen” instead of “🤓 I’ll have 13 donuts”.

You lot are not scientist, you have no need of machine precision in your day to day, unless you of course are in which case you ought to pay as much attention to your job than to an internet argument of preferred aesthetics attached to systems of measurement.

The inconsistency in people is astounding.

100F sounds more correct than 37.7C when you deal with summer in the south. 37.7 is too low to accurately convey that plastic trash cans outside are melting.

You take an easy to remember number in °F, and translating it to °C.
"37°C sounds more correct than 98.6°F when you deal with body temperarure". See? I did the same.
No one says "it's hot outside, it must be 37.7°C", that is obvious.
...
Well, it's not like 37.7 isn't easy to remember, but it's gringos we're dealing with

It's not, dude. Anyone who uses celsius knows that temperature around 40° is, indeed, hot

Wtf is that opinion dude. Who would want to be 'whimsy" and "creative" when measuring stuff. What are you, 3 years old?

There is no football. There is only handegg and divegrass.
Especially as in american football their foot enter in contact with the ball a very underwheming number of time in the course of a match compared to the other type of football where you use your feet to handle it almost all the time, so calling it football seems way more justified...

Make you wonder why it isn't called holdball, throwball or armorball...

Or Rugby for pussies :meguusmug:

I have to use American imperial for work. Clients come in with things like "I need this cut to 5 and three eights" and everytime I have to go to the chart on the wall to put the measurements in the system to cut the metal. I always have to consult the chart to enter 5.375. Using millimeters and centimeters at least is easier in that regard as I don't have to jump back and forth with the chart. I imagine it's only a matter of time before I memorise it, but I degrees.

I don't mind using either metric or imperial. Both have good cases when and where they are used. I hate metric wrenches and wish damnation on the guy that thought we need it in automotive industries. For more precision tasks like my work I do prefer metric.
