That final panel felt like an axed finale to me, so reading about another volume right beneath it revitalised me.

Not really an axe but a very common thing where romcom story (esp shonen/school settings ones) ends immediately after the main couple gets together... I could list a few example but there's too many to count...

funnily enough seinen and josei romcom rarely goes this end immediately route.

Yeah, but that's not what I'm getting out of her reaction... It's something much sadder than that.

Not sure if we'll ever learn either way, but what Tsubaki said must have resonated with her on a personal level. I suspect it's because the "person I will always love, even if they won't love me back" is Tadashi's father, and that's a part of herself she prefers to think about as little as possible.

She did a complete 180 because she went from seeing in Tsubaki the second coming of her ex-husband the scumbag to seeing a reflection of herself. What can she do but acknowledge her officially as Tadashi's girlfriend and remove herself from the situation before she bawls her eyes out?

It's almost hard to believe, but they confessed to each other like twenty-five chapters ago.

It seems to me that any romcom that has the confession at the halfway point or even earlier, by the end of its run, has excellent chances of being peak. This one is no exception.

I don't believe this manga will go out any other way but on the author's terms, and ending the manga after this arc is over wouldn't be too bad of a way to wrap things up, the manga has said enough about its characters to deserve having a conclusive ending happen now. Not that that is likely to happen
