”most” is just a synonym for ”very” here, the word can be used in that sense too

I think "a most critical juncture" is best of the 3.

-"A most critical" The above commenter is correct in that it means the same as "a very critical". This also has a connotation of education and formality, which you might expect of a field-grade officer.
-"One of the most" implies more knowledge of the greater war effort than a field-grade officer stuck on an island for so long to know or share.
-"the most" is the only one I'd say is wrong.
