I don't think seeing faces in things (pareidolia) is an example of simulacrum, I might be wrong though, it's been almost a decade since I read the book, there might be something about faces in there.

I didn't even see what it was supposed to be until she pointed it out, and even then I feel like what it's supposed to be is a bit of a stretch
But maybe that's just me

came here to say this as well, pareidolia is what their referring to, but it might just be difficult to translate technical terms like that
