As a matter of fact do we even know their age? Rin is clearly not some little girl and they're both in the same school so how much their age gap really is? A year? Two? Maybe three? Cause some act like it was a 20 something going for a teenager when both were young
It's pretty easy to determine their ages.
Ruka meets Rin for the first time in her first year of middle school, putting her at 12/13.
During this time, Rin is a second-year in high school, putting her at 16/17.
So a minimum of 3 years, and a maximum of 5 years depending on where their respective birthdays fall.
Pushing the math further, since they're still first-years, Ruka is 15/16 right now, and Rin would be 19/20.

Doesn't japanese finish school at like 17/18 though? Only times I've ever seen a third year being 19/20 or above is when they repeated a year so Rin being that old doesn't sound right

Like, if Ruka was at first year of middle school and Rin a second year of high school when they met, now Ruka being a first year of high school shouldn't Rin already have finished school?

I'm a little distracted doing stuff right now so I could be wrong but I feel there's something wrong with that math :v

I have no idea what part of this confuses you, nowhere did I say that Rin is still in high school.
Here's a quick timeline, using the minimum ages for both of them for consistency.
  • In the flashback of Chapter 19, it starts in Winter of Ruka's Middle School Year, and Rin is in her Second Year in High School. Ruka 12, Rin 16
  • Moving along further in the chapter, Rin's dialogue implies she made a decision "back in her second year", and talks about going to a university in Hokkaido. This also implies that Rin is in her final year of high school here, and Ruka is a second-year in middle school. Ruka 13, Rin 17.
  • For the final part we move on to the present time. Ruka is now in her first year of high school. Rin, presumably is now in her second year of university. Ruka: 15, Rin 19.

I did say I was a little distracted doing stuff so I probably just mixed something :v

Thanks for the more details by the way, I honestly barely remember any of that lol

Just for the record I don't necessarily disagree it's a little weird a 17 year old going for a 13 year old, only thing I'm arguing against is how some people are trying to frame Ruka being like that because she was raped or how Rin is suppose a pedophile even though she too was underage, really, there's worse age gap than 4 year old especially with both being under 18 lol

It just bothers me how some are making Rin to be this rapist monster when the story not even once went with that angle and it's entirely about how she broke Ruka heart

Seeing people worry for this plot point was funny. I knew Sunna was too stupid for any tension the new chick tried to stir up to actually stick.

Four years isn't a big deal later on but especially under 18 it can become problematic. Just to put it in perspective, four years are a third of the time that Ruka has been alive at that point. At 16/17 being interested in sex and experimenting isn't unusual, they're almost adults. At 12/13 it's a bit of a different story, they're not even/barely teenagers. And wether it was rape or not, pressuring a child into sex when they're not yet ready is definitely something that should be questioned

Where was it shown Rin pressured Ruka into sex? Cause I honestly don't remember that

I can admit when I'm wrong but from what I remember the manga always framed it as basically they get into a relationship which eventually ends bad only because Rin is a total mess and was playing with Ruka heart

Like, this entire idea that Ruka was raped, preyed on, pressured, forced, whatever way you decide to call it sounds like total headcanon from people putting it in the worst way possible when the manga not even once portrayed it like that

From what I remember it was explicitly shown that the problem was entirely because Rin is a broken individual who plays with other people for her own amusement not that she got into a relationship with a younger girl nor because they had sex

Like, really, you guys keep focusing on the age gap and sex when that's literally never portrayed as the problem in their relationship

You guys don't like it? That's entirely fair but let's not kid ourselves as if the mangaka portrayed that as the thing that changed Ruka

If you can reread chapter 19 and the most recent chapters about what happened between them and conclude she wasn't pressured and manipulated by an older girl, there's nothing much to discuss. The story wasn't being subtle about its portrayal of their situation back then, or the intent from Rin. If you don't see that, there's a fundamental difference I don't think we'll be able to remedy. We'll have to agree to disagree.

I mainly brought it up because you keep insisting that it's a non-issue. Rin at that point is a lot more "mature" than Ruka and especially from Ruka's perspective she's basically an adult. That means that there's inherently a power imbalance and the potential for the younger person to just go along with whatever the older person says because they trust them to be more experienced. Even if they aren't ready for it yet

I just looked into chapter 19 right now and Ruka herself talks on how her issue with Rin is that deep down she knew she wasn't special and she doesn't want to be swept anymore like she was when with Rin, it's never framed as their relationship in itself being a problem nor that their had sex but how Rin was acting about the relationship

I insist it's not the issue because the MANGA ITSELF never portray their relationship as a issue, not the age gap, not the sex, it's entirely about Rin being fucked up in the head and playing with Ruka heart

It's like I said before you guys don't like their relationship due to the age gap? Perfectly fine and understandable but the fucking manga itself is not making that the issue but that Rin played with Ruka heart

The mangaka is very clearly writing that the entire problem is with Rin being a broken individual playing with others and you all better accept that cause there's high chances we'll continue seeing her as a regular character and that she and Ruka will mend their relationship

Like, really, if any of you expect Rin will be called out or somehow be punished because she had a relationship with a younger girl then you're setting yourself for disappointment because that's not what we're being shown and I doubt it'll ever go that way, the most we might see is that she'll realize playing with Ruka heart was wrong

These two issues are inherently connected, yet you keep insisting that one of the two is irrelevant. The age gap wouldn't be that problematic if it was a healthy relationship. Still unusual but better. The emotional manipulation would still be bad if the age gap wasn't a thing but it would be a lot less problematic.

Rin used the power imbalance and the difference in experience to toy with Ruka. She explicitly looked for someone less experienced, someone that would look up to her and trust her to toy with.

Except what you say completely ignores that we see Rin playing with anyone she can, it was never simply about Ruka being younger or inexperienced, she was simply another victim in the long list of people with who Rin played with

Like, really, we're literally shown in the flashback how she plays with other people who are clearly inexperienced and that she has reputation of playin with people

You guys are so focused on the age gap that you're ignoring the rest of the context, that as Ruka says in chapter 19 pretty much sums it up, she's not special, Rin has been playing with people for a long time cause she can, the only thing that really sets Ruka apart is that she's younger and who her brother is

Like, just reread chapter 41, we're clearly shown some of Rin targets were other students who had zero experience, who trusted her cause they thought Rin loved them and then she toyed with them

You're all too laser focused on Ruka age plus fact that we know her that you miss the point that her age barely enters the equation on Rin being a bitch who toys with people, she was just the new shiny toy and nothing else, if she was older their relationship would literally have played the same

Which is why I'll repeat once more, the manga is never framing it as the age gap being a issue but that Rin playing with people hearts being the issue

Really, just keep reading and you'll see how they will most likely never touch on the age gap aspect at all cause the mangaka is not thinking about it at any point

Just another point I want to make, you're all forgetting one big thing, that Rin tried getting with Hamanasu and he completely rejected her and that she most likely went for Ruka entirely because of him

As a matter of fact to quote Rin at the end of chapter 41:

"Ever since I met Hamanasu-kun, it felt like my supressed emotions that I had been let fade away were about to spill out.
I want to become someone special."

Then next page
"They look pretty alike..."
With a little text saying at the end "I've found my special."

It was never about Ruka age at any point, if she was a boy or just older Rin would probably have done the same cause it's all about Ruka being Hamanasu brother and how he made Rin supressed feelings surface again

Honestly, if Hamanasu didn't refuse her advances chances are we would never have a plot cause then she would have no reason to have gone for Ruka :v

You're all just way too focused on the age gap that you're ignoring there's a lot more going and that the age gap is pretty much more or less completly ignored by the mangaka because that's not the real problem of their relationship

Manipulation swatted down onto the ground and crushed under the heel of real love. Damn that was beautiful.
