I was going to comment about how it's become a bit cliche that humans build labyrinthine tower cities and then just die off, but this is from the author that basically started the trend, so all is forgiven.

She might've done it to try and settle her nerves or something, since she was panicking and in emotional distress
Yeah, she was going through a mental decline brought on by suddenly learning she'd have to be in this enclosed space for two more months, JUST when she was about to get out, and while Misaki was able to calm her a bit, she seemed to want to get closer and likely also had worries over that not progressing. Her drunk talk about her worries, followed by being isolated doing her job probably let her get inside her own head more than was healthy, leading her to drink more to calm herself until she could talk with Misaki.

Also, Mei's intelligence and lonesome nature think that Shijima (in the simulation) and Big Sis may be based off her as split aspects, with Majime being based off of Misaki. Misaki's hat is reminiscent of the egg, as well as her job being the cook. I do hope to see more of these two, but I doubt we will, given the description makes it sound more like a loosely linear anthology.

Great timing on this release. I recently started working at a nuclear power plant and I'm always hearing stories about subs from the navy nuke guys so a lot of this feels pretty familiar. Cool to see it in manga format.

It literally says the context WE read right ??
I just don't see the point. Why not 3 8-hour shifts then? Is there any advantage to artificially shorten the perceived days? Other physically or mentally taxing jobs are also 8 hours, so I won't accept that as an excuse.

Nuclear submarine crews originally operated on 18 hour days so the sailors could adjust slightly within the 24 hour day.

They got six hours of sleep and twelve hours of waking time, in which they would engage in work and leisure. No commute is required, nor is there any need to talk with family or engage in recreation outside the workplace (submarine), thus lots of time spent traveling is removed.

It has since been changed to a 24 hour day where crews can operate on a watch schedule that evenly fits into 24 hours (2 12-hour watches, 3 8hr, 4 6hr), but research has not determined whether this improves sleep or work quality over the 18 hour model.

TL;DR: it’s perfectly realistic and has been common practice to have a nuclear submarine crew operating on 18 hour “days.”
