I believe that Higurashi fallen to in some limbo of anime in general sense, like a person looks and associates with "anime" in general, not some specific work, especially the old art.
So this why is strange this silly blue gal is really part of real show, not some shitpost art that simply exist in forums.
Same with other works, especially visual novel based ones that follow similar artstyle from the time. Mostly can cite "is from x" but never seen or understand the following, so is more of a presence rather that something.

To the best of my ability:
Higurashi looks pretty generic, people probably could not point to that screenshot and say it belongs to a specific series.
It's strange because she isn't some shitpost concocted by the forums, she belongs to a real piece of media.
Same with other visual novels that follow the same art style. Some people can tell you it came from X franchise, others just lump it under the umbrella term "anime"

I gotta disagree wholeheartedly though. Studio Deen anime adaption makes it pretty distinct, even if people make fun of some of scenes for being odd. Same with the visual novel. :aquadrink:

Here the thing:

DEEN version is the version people remember.
If you show someone DEEN and after OG imagery, people will simply believe this is some sort of shitpost or April's fools art, not a real artwork related.

I still think it's a weird takeaway to say that Higurashi looks generic. It has so many adaptions/installments that are all distinct from other anime. Even if the OG imagery may be amateurish or 'shitposty', it still has soul and will stick with people who see it.

By the way, have you heard of the new Higurashi anime that's coming out?

Yes, generic is not the word, rather is more from a different era and artstyle, like seeing Clamp artstyle.

The take is exactly because his presence is so big in the community, that is strange to thing for people that are not in the niche, to think have a specific work behind it.
Generic not in the sense "ordinary" ~ "without value", but so commun in the community that most don't even notice where come from.

And exactly because have soul, the OG art turned in "shitpost" so resilient, even to this day.
