Something to keep in mind when reading this manga is just how rigid and stagnant Japanese society really is. After high school or college (if one attended), making new connections or friendships is very difficult. At best, you might have a few work colleagues, but even then, forging bonds is harder.
The point is, neither character has anyone else to confide in; yet, having been friends back in their school days, they naturally become more important to each other than they will ever be to anyone else around them, with the exception of family (which, in turn, involves other barriers worth mentioning).
At this point in the story, a widow is confiding in an old friend, while he, in turn, feels inspired by her to keep pursuing his dreams. Comments warning about a possible "rebound relationship" fear something that hasn't happened; it is a projection.
It is entirely possible for Otakei to help Tsubaki overcome her grief and for Tsubaki to help Otakei overcome his depression without any romance developing between them, only for them to start dating later, once both have healed (I believe this is the path the author intends to take). That would dispel most of the concerns laid bare in the comments section.
