for free, as a gift
Free shit still smells like shit.

Mistakes happen. Negligence and indifference are by choice. That item of TS failure didn't happen out of an oversight. That required intent.

So, you can take your platitudes and shove them up your ass.

I'm sure that will make the smell of the shit go away. Yep, can't fault that logic. If I ain't breathing it, it ain't smelly.
With your attention to detail, I bet you could be a good editor, if anyone was willing to work with you

Exactly, it required intent. Now, before assuming that they don't know how the language works, ask yourself, what was the intent here? Think about the context, think about how Japanese text flows and is written differently from English text, think about the shape and size of speech bubbles in manga, think about the text going inside that bubble, think about the shape, size and font of that text, think about how breaking that word might improve readability for readers, think about how, sometimes, breaking rules that no one cares about for the betterment of the reading experience is something a good typesetter would do.

What an absolute clown, I'll tell you.

If I'm the clown, what makes that you? The no-limbs freak show trying to teach me how to ride the unicycle?

Dude, you're so wrong and backwards about everything, it's not even funny anymore. You keep preaching about those poor, violated bubbles, yet do you even know what the purpose of bubbles is? Hold on to your pants, it's providing or improving your beloved readability. Reality check, sunshine:

Bubbles serve the text, never the other way round.

Bubbles' primary reason for existence is to give type best possible contrast over panel content, and they do that by providing calm and uniform background against which that text is easiest to discern and decipher. If text didn't exist in panel space, or if convention somehow reliably and consistently served text with contrasting background otherwise, the concept of bubbles wouldn't even be a thing! They're just one tool of many, and if one tool doesn't fit, what do you do? Correct, you supplement it with other tools, big surprise! Read: If the bubbles are shaped so that they only fit a writing system you're not even using, then guess what: you redraw the bubbles, merge compound bubbles, spill text and compensate for loss of contrast otherwise … whichever helps. Because you know what also improves readability? Not line-breaking words in the most reta-
rded places (see?), especially within syllables. That's what. Adjustments to fit morphology notwithstanding, you NEVER break within English syllables, and if the word is one syllable only, no matter how many letters, tough luck, you don't break. Period.

Rules no one cares about? Funny that; evidence seems to disagree, showing that the overwhelming majority of rules supposedly no one cares about is still adhered to by TS (even this SL's), and that's not even counting commercially available material where actually spending money and effort on adhering to said rules is considered worthwhile to do and make as opposed to just pocketing or divesting the savings. Some no-care rules those must be, huh?

Also, funny how you argue breaking some rules for betterment of readability would be a good thing, but then you completely ignore that there are other rules that could also be broken for said betterment. Like, oh, I don't know, ignoring Japanese-shaped bubbles for English-shaped text, perhaps?

You keep talking about intent. I wonder what your intent was when you were stringing your internally inconsistent, even incommensurable yappings together as they happened to follow your hallucinated trains of thought (well, more like derailments thereof) at the time.

By all means try again, but by no means feel obligated to do so.

Absolute 3rd grade level retort there bud.

If the bubbles are shaped so that they only fit a writing system you're not even using, then guess what: you redraw the bubbles, merge compound bubbles, spill text and compensate for loss of contrast otherwise … whichever helps.

Look, I'm not one of those "stop complaining, you're getting this for free" kind of guy, but there is a limit to what we should be expecting from freely distributed pirated material. Sure, all of those are good options, but how much are readers willing to sacrifice for quality? If every scan group out there tried to avoid words spilling out of every bubble by redrawing them, don't you think that might be getting to the point of diminishing returns? How long would we have to wait for free stories that we read just to pass time? And what if the redrawing actually gets in the way of the rest of the page? And I don't just mean literally a bubble on top of the art, I mean that Japanese artists draw the art in the page with the vertical speech bubble in mind, maybe (really, maybe) changing that might disrupt the compositional flow intended, hurting the readers' experience much more than a one syllable word being broken in two lines would.

Because you know what also improves readability? Not line-breaking words in the most reta-
rded places (see?), especially within syllables.

I could read that just fine, maybe you should get tested for dyslexia or something?

Also, funny how you argue breaking some rules for betterment of readability would be a good thing, but then you completely ignore that there are other rules that could also be broken for said betterment. Like, oh, I don't know, ignoring Japanese-shaped bubbles for English-shaped text, perhaps?

Sure, yeah, break 'em!

By all means try again, but by no means feel obligated to do so.

The contents of and the language you use in your replies tell me exactly why you brought up that point in the first place and why you won't change your mind: you completely lack adaptability, you have no concept of flexibility. Both of ideas and of form.

I got this vibe from your other replies, but this bit here really makes it dire. I say this with all the love in my heart, but you need to log off reddit, 4-chan or whatever forum full of people like this

you've been visiting, my friend. I'm telling you this because I, too, was once a teenager who thought that "inflexibility = cognitive superiority" and "big words = compelling argument", but when you start to speak to actual people, have actual conversations, you realize that that's just not how communication between people works, man. At least not in spaces like the one we are in right now. You know, sometimes, you gotta break that one word syllable, even if it's wrong, it might be the right thing to do.

trying so hard to find problems to solutions
They should put your picture next to the article documenting that fallacy. It's baffling how many assumptions and assertions you need to make to have even so much as a hint of support for your position and also not feel a shred of shame doing so that should give you reason to pause and think about what you're even trying to achieve here. (Sorry, what your intent was.) Must be swamped by that bloat of platitudes.

"avoid words spilling out of every bubble"
… is literally the opposite of one of the many tools I listed as available to deal with fitting square pegs in round holes. And you call me unflexible.

You should really have used that non-obligation to try again that I recommended.

also bro chill the fuck out, scanlating is volunteering - a lot of typesetting stuff may seem like common sense but it really isn't. don't have to immediately insult people. not saying you can't ask for higher quality (hell that's why I started scanlating) but everyone starts out, be patient, learn kindness.

Wow, some terribly securely guarded trade secret, to observe the damn line-breaking rules of the target language, as provided by resources readily available literally at your fingertips these days and especially for restrictions out of a source writing system under which you'll be doing line breaking the majority of your time. Truly occult knowledge.
ask for higher quality
Dude, by breaking that unbreakable syllable, it literally took more effort to diminish the quality than if it'd just been left alone. Literally two keystrokes: hyphen, enter. Someone had to consciously go out of their way to make it shittier, solely out of some misguided religious zealotry to not touch bubble borders for the sake of not touching bubble borders.

I wonder what a typesetter's job is. To know how to set type, imagine that.
