This is such a weird first chapter, because their relationship is completely familial-platonic for the rest of the story. It really does feel like it's just a filter, or maybe it's supposed to be a hook?

Either way later on in the series, spoilers, the child is explicitly asked if they have romantic feelings, and it's completely shut down. Like "never even crossed my mind" kind of shut down. which makes this feel like a pretty odd way to start things off.

It's like the pseudo-bss scene in like, chapter 3 of Ogami. The inclusion is baffling when there's literally nothing else like it in the rest of the manga.

I don’t think it was shut down, but Noah didn’t know what Love means.

In that arc, the person who asked was an insane Heretic who wanted Noah to say they’re in-love so he could fuse them together into a Monster.
Noah answering “I dunno?! 😊 Hahaha!!” because he’s so innocent really pissed the Heretic off, because they wanted to know if Noah really loved Olivia.
Then when Noah attacked them over Olivia dying, that confirmed to the Heretic that he did love Olivia, and the Heretic let Noah get into the pit with her to be fused.

(And who can forget, they kissed again recently!)

I can understand your interpretation, but it is still pretty up in the air. I don't think being forced to transfer air while being attacked underwater is really kissing. Maybe technically, but it's the least important part of what's going on.

I wouldn't call cpr in general romantic, women literally die more frequently when they need cpr because people are scared to be called a creep taking advantage of the situation. This is exacerbated by people who haven't taken cpr training (or those that have even, but haven't internalized that women's bodies aren't innately sexual) that can get really focused on privacy/decency when a woman's shirt and bra need to be cut off to attach a defibrillator. And then she dies.

Anyways, a child being upset that their mother/mentor was murdered is definitely not something that implies romance by default. I do recognize that the author chose for these things to happen in order to draw certain things on the page, and it's not unlikely that it will go in that direction. I would not say it has as of yet though. Right now? Wouldn't be surprised if it's teased at, but left as subtextual.

Or they Usagi Drop it and have them get together after the kid is groomed up into fully-fledged adult and adventurer.
