BEWARE: the ones on top are not chestnuts, they are horse-chestnuts, or conkers. Despite the name, it's a totally unrelated plant, and the nuts are slightly toxic.
Sorry, but I'm pretty sure there's only a single type of chestnut shown in that picture.The first one is called in French "marrons d'Inde" and are not edible (even poisonous), and the ones at the bottom are called "châtaignes" or "marrons" when they are cooked (as a side dish, or as a sweet confectionary), and those one are delicious.
This one's better for comparing them :
On the left are "tame" chestnuts.
These are the edible, tasty ones.
They have a lot of long thin spikes on the outer shell (resembling a sea-urchin... but green) and there a small "tuft" on the nut inside.
On the right are "wild" (or horse-, or ... ) chestnuts.
These are inedible, you can recognize them by the low number of stubby spikes on the outer shell, and by the lack of small "tuft" on the inner shell.
