There are many reasons I resent that the author added this scene, chief among them that such an asshole wouldn't be supported by competent subordinates. Oh sure there could be any number reasons why he he could rule with such a shit attitude, but there is no fucking way in hell the palace staff and royal guards wouldn't know his personality nor his general mood and act accordingly.

So it undermines the entirety of the chapter and the ability of the king to effectively rule.

Yeah. it was strange.
it only can be explained with one thing perhaps.
His eyes are dead and empty like at someone who suffers from depression. a creepy fact about depression.. is that they FEEL nothing. so they will try to do anything to feel anything.. even become into an asshole.
but it is just my guess.

That would be really something if the manga went in this way to dhow some awareness to this kind of thing. But that is pretty unlikely given the tone of the story. If awareness was the idea, it would problably be better to do it by using a character that's closer to the MC.
