Jokes aside, it is insane how that thing is on by default in search engines now. The waste must be copious with every search generating summaries nobody gives fuck about.

My God, you can't even search definitions of words anymore without it giving you the AI trash instead of the old definitions google used to give you. It sucks, because the old definitions were decent and would show you etymology and estimated timeframe/history for usage on words, but of course enshittification consumes all and now we just get dumb AI paragraphs and lists generated instead

the main reason i've welcomed the AI overview is exactly this. maybe around 5 years ago there was a HUGE decline in search quality. i used to be able to instantly find the exact info i was looking for 90%+ of the time, now i'm lucky if some random redditor has asked the same question before and it's been answered.

So your solution is welcoming the thing that encourages search to be worse by allowing Google to get away with making search worse instead of improving their base product? Also, In the process, killing off the websites that provide the answers to the AI by starving them of revenue? Which makes the answers less reliable in a negative feedback loop?

I use Firefox on mobile. It searches via Google by default (including the AI overview) but you can change or add a search engine in the settings.

No, Firefox is completely seperate from Google, albeit, it does have Google as the default search engine.

All you have to do is switch the search engine in the app to something like DuckDuckGo and then from there you can turn off all of the AI features within the Firefox app and whichever search engine you choose

You can even tell it to block AI "enhancements" and images for you. It's pretty spotty on the image front but it's better than nothing.

100% agree. Years ago search was somewhat decent - if you used good search terms, but we had massive SEO cat and mouse game with google for over 20 years.
It progressively went worse, and at one point you basically had to search term reddit/term stackoverflow/term a website you think might have the answer. Otherwise you'll get garbage only, and this was pre-AI, with AI the amount of garbage just increased exponentially.
Now with AI overview you can usually get somewhat decent answer to vague question, AND links to sites it based this answer on. So you can just do your own research if needed.

This IS a small, rather dumb model, but at least for me it's actually useful and i'd rather have this than go back to how google was 20 years ago where i had to actually be precise with what i'm looking for instead of searching with basically nonsense and getting something relevant as a result.
You like AI, you don't - doesn't matter, it's here to stay, it will get better, it will get cheaper, and it's not going anywhere. Even if potential bubble pops it doesn't mean we go back to world without LLMs. Might as well accept it and learn how to use it to your advantage.

Yeah I'm being the snarky obtuse one here, sure.

And if you lament it so much, yet continue to go along with it because "it's inevitable" you're either vitue signaling or being a pushover.

There may be no putting AI as a concept back in it's Pandora's Box so to speak, but we as the public ultimately determine how it will be implimented. I'd much rather AI be used for it's actual useful niches in coding support and medical applications than the GenAI bullshit that's destroying this planet. We CAN mitigate it's damage but only if we act collectively against it and don't bend the knee to the corpos.

Having this mentality is like being opposed to global pollution, then littering and saying "everyone else does it so why shouldn't I?".

"Everyone will not just". It gives people real advantage, not many people will give it away for vague reasons like "destroying this planet".
Also AI isn't tied to corporations, you have a lot of stuff you can host yourself.
