Well, it's a real thing that happens. And this one actually happened in a... realistic way. Usually pick up artists find lonely girls and when a guy comes in and say "she's with me" they just go. These guys went up to a girl clearly with a guy and thought they could easily score because they are good-looking enough. And then, when made look bad, they actually did something to hurt them underhandedly. This is actually the most realistic depiction of how people like these guys act.

Also, this part actually wasn't about making the guy look cool, like it usually is. But about the guy protecting something that someone cares about, and the girls isn't just blushing about how cool the guy is, but she starts crying because the guy she likes was just beat up... in other words, it was partly her fault this happened (this is how she can see it). So it isn't just a trope that's going on here. Hopefully the artists uses this to do some interesting things.
