She is a gold digger. However, it doesn't automatically mean she couldn't love Liam or wouldn't feel grateful, as long as her material wishes are fulfilled.

It's better not to overextend. He doesn't actually have any experience running a huge "empire". The larger his domain would be, especially with some parts of it far away from his homeplanet, the more difficult it would be to keep under control. Especially when those new parts would have belonged to the Berkley mafia family, so they would be full of people for whom ruthless corruption is the basic way of life. On the other hand, Liam already knows the empire itself is very petty and nefarious. His wife's family was oppressed for thousands of years pretty much for no good reason. Now that he's inheriting the title of a duke from that family, he needs to make sure the emperor won't consider him troublesome.
