As much as I hate this fcking trope for this fcking manga, it makes total sense. He did try to defend, but the princess was too fast for him to defend without harming or killing her. So, he decided to just let it happen.

His motivation has been consistent throughout this stupid Manga; he'll do anything just for his loved ones, and that includes the princess.

Nah, words are cheap. His actions, in refusing to harm Medis even if it costs his life, were the real proof that his words were genuine. Of course if it were up to me, choosing to die at Medis' hands instead of hurting her would have still been a failure, because obviously Medis realizing she killed Akira would have utterly destroyed her, hurt her emotionally far more than any physical injury or even death would have.
