¥3,000 is not a lot at all. It's around £15 or $30 for you American types. It's a nice to have but certainly not an amount that should require "saving up" for.
Considering Hiiragi’s situation, it’s either she’s living by herself, or she has to support her broken excuse of a mom. So 3000 my be a lot for her.

It's actually closer to $18, but Minimum wage in Japan is around $6 or so, meaning that if Hiiragi is covering a lot of her own food expenses through part-time work then $18 is a rather lot for an independent teenager.

from some (limited) research i did about living in japan, depending on where they are salaries could be as low as 900 ish euros a month for minimum wage but the cost of living is something between 500 and 800 euros a month (all converted of course) in rural parts of japan which isn't a lot but is still quite a bit considering it's apparently rare for salaries to go near or above 1 to 2 million yen (~5385 eurosto 10000 euros, ~6000 to ~12000 USD), a year in rural japan

That was my point, she shouldn't be required to save up for it when her circumstances clearly do require it; and thats sad.
