I'm assuming that when they were using the telescope, the older Shinju was alive, and the time when she tried to kill herself was the same day that the older Shinju died. Granted, that still doesn't mean that he's the father.

It looks like she's holding the lighter up to herself but not actually touching the flame. I'm not sure on the science, but maybe that would be enough to ignite gasoline (which has a flash point of -43 degrees Celsius), but not kerosene and that's why she was confused. I also think it's possible that she faked her suicide attempt in order to seduce Miyamae.
