Becoming attendants may have seemed like a smart choice, but without knowing how much influence the god has, he may be able to just assume direct control and force them to do it anyway.
I don't think he'll force them to fight Vandalieu...but he'll use them to do things they normally wouldn't.

...like, say, actually help convince the rest of their classmates to throw away their lives fighting Vandalieu.

The only sadness that Rodcorte being the main antagonist in this series brings to me, is that he has to make a bunch of other people die miserable or pointless deaths before he gets a chance on Vandalieu's Existence-Annihilator 3000.

He probably didn't show them MC life in the origin, and didn't consider being reincarnated and not fighting MC is an option(they thought they would be forced to fight regardless if they can't find alternative). It would be cool if they got reincarnated and befriend Van, but I guess this is for the better.

I wonder if Shimada is also thinking that, if God (Rodcorte) is acting so dodgy and saying he can't do certain things, and wants assistants as system engineers, then there must be a higher god in the hierarchy that she can report her boss to.
Like a Divine HR, or something.
She seems to have picked up on Rodcorte not really being all-powerful.
That's basically like Robert Heinlein's Job: A Comedy of Justice.

so the only reason his former classmates dont attack him is that he is too powerful for them to hurt him now?
and after they were shown how much some of their collective just broke and mistreated him, and then finally killed him?
the only thing i can gather from here is that they dont care about any responsibility or morale at all, they just want to join anyone who is on the stronger side.
dodgy and greedy turncoats.
No, they have no reason or motivation to do the job. They may not have been his close friends, but they don't hate him either. This is Rodcorte's issue, and his own fault Van wound up the way he did. Those two also recognize full well that he lacks empathy for Van, so guaranteeing that the move will fail and refusing is the best way to get Rodcorte to stand down instead of trying to push the job onto them.

I seem to recall another thread from long ago, that the other Gods in creation are not happy with Rodcorte either, for the same reasons we and the characters are, and then some. And they'll confront him about those complaints eventually.

Wasn't there another character pretending to be the MC back on the last world? Shouldn't these two be surprised about that? :thonk:

Them getting his whole backstory off screen is kinda lame. Not getting a reaction to the "oh fuck we accidentally killed our classmate who was given a bum deal by an asshole god" thing is kind of annoying. Not to mention how...passive and uncaring they feel about all this? Like they give off the vibe of yeah they don't want to fight him because he is too strong and they were never given a reason to hate him, but they also feel like they wouldn't mind killing him if he was weak enough to actually be killed by them. Like yeah diplomacy is their first thought but they don't really seem like they care too much?

It might also end up being a "don't go after van" turns into jibberish/incomprehensible language scenario

They weren't pretending, they have the exact same name as the MC but spelled with different kanji. Since the MC never interacted with the class that much, they only remembered the other guy during the first reincarnation.

Given their reactions, I think it's much more likely that Rodcorte only showed them MC's original life on Earth.
