I think fire dragons were just a bad match for the earth dragon. It would be a tank to anything else but it's just kindling in this fight.

Seems like this is how Earth Dragons reproduce. Upon dying they release new offspring into the sky to float into new places to take roots in and grow. Like mushroom releasing it's spores.
