I'm seeing a lot of projection in these comments.

I'm convinced that the author wanted to do a full blown high fantasy series but the editors told him highschool and reincarnation sold more.
I wish it stayed in the fantasy flashbacks because the modern setting is just as boring as in Assassin's Creed.
This is like a worse version of the curse of immortality.
At least, with regular immortality, you can travel the world and experience everything the planet has to offer.

Maybe it wasn't handled in the best way but I'm here for the story. And conflict is the driving force of any story.
Be it between lovers, rivals, enemy factions, or even against nature, conflict is what makes a story. Without it, you just have worldbuilding...
