After getting to this point I think the implication is that Iris is pretty dumb, but in the "original story" she got lucky and had an opponent who was even more foolish than she was. The current Reilin now however just points out Iris' misdeeds and stands up for herself and that's enough.

This kid is way too possessive of Reilin. I can't see this going well in anyway in the long run, unless the kid finds someone else to split his infatuation with.
