They're not necessarily changing it for the sake of originality. Sometimes the previous group might have misread the Kanji and the new group ends up deciding to fix it.
Why didn't he take a weapon or a piece of armor from any of the dead guys? Even if he's a hand-to-hand fighter only, any bladed weapon is still useful for cutting branches for firewood, skinning animals and survival in general. He could even sell it for money later on.
