With how much worldbuilding they've done up to this point they're not gonna restart the world, they're not gonna let the MC die only to bring out some new it's-actually-this-guy MC, they're not gonna let the MC die and continue the story through the view(s) of the other...
An uppity asshole who's way in over his head and will inevitably come around after being forced to accept help from the main characters. That foreshadowing with him already being injured was so subtle I almost didn't catch it.

The cliché story would be that the wolf extermination quest was put up because the village didn't have enough money to request the more difficult orc extermination, hoping an adventurer/party of a high enough rank would come for easy money only to be begged by the villagers into doing the orc...
