Honestly the whole thing is just too unsatisfying. It's like the author just wanted a reason to heap extra punishment on the guy and this is all he could come up with.

I think a better way to handle would have been to confirm that the MC received a jobless evaluation. Then he could have the cover that he's jobless as far as he knows but everyone just assumes there was a problem with the evaluation and he's actually a Holy Knight (which the author probably wanted to avoid so he wouldn't lose the opportunity for people to harass the MC about being jobless). Other good way to handle is just not have this scene at all because it doesn't add anything to the narrative.
