This is a known strategy.
I looked into around a dozen clips and only found this one that showcases the specific version that Madarame BK went for (Coeurl left drop into Dodo middle).

(Minor localization mistake/thing from Duwang here, キングのエルマー is indeed King Elmer, but the problem is that that's his official name in the JP version and he's actually named King Elmer III in the EN version of the game proper, I'd personally keep the localized name instead, you can see this difference by comparing the versus screens in both versions)
