while I don't agree she is a "good" mother I wouldn't say she is absolute garbage and she at least provides with good money too, having both a horrible parent that is also full of debt would be the combination that would truly make the dialogue in this chapter be nonsensical

I really like how this author handles conflicts, like everything still feels pretty grounded.

I don’t like how this is being handled. Feels like we’re just absolving Xu Ke’s mother of the profound damage she’s done to her child. She may not have done it on purpose, but it’s still her responsibility as a parent.

This framing also feels kind of victim-blamey. If the problems are resolved by Zhong Shenxiu just being more vocal, doesn’t that imply that Xu Ke was the one being “difficult?”

That’s how it comes off, whether or not the author intended for it.

I'm sorry, just because she cares about image more than sticking to the plan does not mean she's a good mother. I wouldn't go as far as calling her a bad mother, but good is a big stretch. I know it's for the sake of keeping the series low drama but damn.

Jeez the bar for being a good mother is low for these girls. Id say she's a very bad mother
she's a decent father and a middling mom, being a single parent forces you to have to take on both roles and often times it leads to poor outcomes, women suffer more so due to gender specific reactions to stimuli based on hormonal composition compared to single fathers but a father who suffers an equivalent problem is much worse for a child's development

she's clearly taking on the more fatherly side of order, regiment, and discipline which is inherently outside of her emotional expertise and it's clearly becoming her only parental point of authority

Lots of justification for a woman who openly stated that her career and goals were and are not important than caring for her daughter. If she was trying to be there for her but just getting forced away by work that's one thing, but she says she made a conscious decision to put her career ahead of raising her child.
So no, she's a bad mother. Don't have kids if you want to only focus on your career

"she's clearly taking on the more fatherly side of order, regiment, and discipline"

also telling a chinese woman to not have kids is hilarious considering the state pretty much mandates women having kids
