He's not a bad person, he just has masochistic tendencies and they take advantage of that to manipulate him. As long as they're hypocrites and think they're better than him when in fact they're worse, the protagonist will still be someone worth feeling bad for.

But it is very likely that he will sink deeper and deeper because when you can't escape, you either cry or take advantage.
