He's actually terrible in direct combat, but he's a fantastic at tactics. That was part of the reason why the upper command had no idea what to do with him. So, yes, he'd die horribly against even an average combatant. His actual brilliance (beyond the suicidal tendencies) gets shown in this bit with how they are co-opting the ram tactic.

Bit of a different from reading the novel, as the entire platoon of 30ish captured the ship together, instead of just 4 of them. Not sure how they're gonna go about having all of them become more important later on without them being part already.
