The king's eyes were shut in those flashbacks, so while he assumed it was Raul doing the deed, it's possible it was done by someone else that made the king believe that it was Raul doing it. After all, Raul is more artistic when it comes to making his enemies suffer.

Yeah, I don't feel like this is like Raoul at all. Either it'll be someone else who was doing it, or he straight up imagined it while the machine malfunctioned or some shit.
