And why isn't he checking his mother now, she could literally be in her deathbed this time, because he's being lackadaisical.

How would checking on his mother help in any way? There'd be nothing at all that he could do to help her if it was low. Also I think he knows roughly when she'll die from the plot of the game, and even just visually you can see that her condition hasn't gotten too bad yet.

The magic system here is so soft, that it's a wonder the MC also didn't invent a spell to heal his mother by imagining her to "be healthy".

Step 1: used 1 liter cups as the unit of mana measurement by means of the “Create Water” spellcasting.

Step 2: solidified (by gaining experience) his mental image of mana measurement and hence created an original spell of mana measurement that happens directly (and thus no longer needs any intermediate creation of water).

Honestly...yeah. That's a clever way to number-ize mana consumption. It's reliability and scale might need to be adjusted depending on the person, but this is very functional for his purposes.
