technically he didnt, Norman kept pushing himself it's just he couldn't accept Norman as a failure and he thought he was also pushing Norman to a corner too, and Norman who felt like he was holding back Regal wanted to let Regal to his own thing without worrying about him

Regal sure took "i dont care even if you hate me" to the extreme, what with the endless belittling and the fire magic that the teacher had to step in to stop in chapter one. Certainly a unique way to be a guiding star by crushing someones spirit and putting in risk of at least severe injuries if not death. This guy is a bit softer than than bakugo but i dont think i can vibe with him without completely redacting his actions and attitude in the first few chapters from my mind

Yeah i've noticed this a bunch in these types of stories. Authos want to put in a last second flashback twist to explain why the bully is such a POS but they tend to fall flat purely due to how extreme the author makes the bullying.
