Ah, found it. I remembered that Tojiko's friend Mimi had already been introduced before, much earlier. It was back in chapter 106. It was pretty clear from that chapter where we're heading with her backstory. We didn't get any further focus on Sekilala's backstory, which likely would've had similar themes, so it seems like we're going to get maximum tragedy from Mimi.

there's also another game (boku no natsuyasumi) that also references august 32nd, though not in a very direct way
if certain inputs were made and the conditions are right, you'll glitch the game to go beyond august 31st.
since the game isn't built to handle weird dates, it'll increasingly get more unstable with textures being garbage data and limbs not appearing where they should be. i think this is where how this thing got its popularity?

i also remember a doujin referencing this mysterious phenomenon as one of it's chapters
