There are those people who argue in order to debate, inform, and seek the truth, and those are the ones you should spend time arguing with.

But there are many people who use debate not as a tool to exchange information, but to flood the world with their misinformation. They will change positions, use falacies, and speak without ettiquitte as long as someone is listening.

That person's goal is not to argue for a purpose, their purpose is to have an arguement. It does not matter if they win or lose, they just want to have muddied the waters and leave spectators remembering that "there is legitimacy in arguing over this topic". (See flat earthers, neo-nazis, ancient aliens, etc).

In short, arguing with them only benefits them and harms you and any spectators. Dismiss them for the jerks they are and focus your efforts on those who are genuine in their approach.
You see malice where there usually isn't any. The people you speak of rarely have such grand of an agenda, they are just frustrated - and if they change their positions mid-debate, it's because they mostly care not of the actual opinions they represent, but about being in the right, no matter what.

Yes, debating with them is still hard (though not impossible: for example if you trick them into adopting your original stance, they can feel being in the right all they want). But dismissing them out of hand? That would be the same error this kid falls into in this chapter. These people have issues with exchanging opinions, but that does not necessarily mean that their opinions are always invalid.

It's at this point that I somewhat disagree with Confucius, at least as presented here. Shielding yourself from opinions not properly expressed will leave you with less frustrations, but also with less knowledge. Debate, by definition, is a frustrating endeavor - after all, what's more frustrating than sometimes being in the wrong? On the other hand, yes, compassion is vital so that the debate does not devolve into pointless quarrel.

I can relate the most with this chapter than any other.

While, these new student kind of less intense, especially if we compare it to the first one, doesn’t mean their problem is less important.
