Eh, I've done this myself in the past, taking someone else's shift for them - but I got paid the full amount and he didn't suffer any penalties because he found his own replacement for the day.

I'm not here to dogpile, and this could quickly turn into a nasty back-and-forth xD

I'm also not really going to justify what happens in this chapter, as it doesn't seem like these guys are close trusting friends. Friends, yes. Close, no. What I can say that might be productive is this: it's FUN to help friends out. I have had so VERY many times where someone has thanked me for letting them help me out simply because they wanted to. It's a nice feeling to help someone, even with something minor or something silly. As long as it's something that really did need help, something that matters to the person (and strange hobbies fall into that), and isn't harmful/enabling... it can be fun. I've covered shifts for my friend when a new Destiny event happens, as an example. Not something he "needed" to do, but I was happy to do it because I knew it mattered to him and he had fun. Normally he ends up doing the same if I have a gig or something. It's fun. Even as a small simple thing, it's fun.

To end, I'll double back to what I said about these guys not being close friends. This seems more like the MC is being "pushed" to do this, maybe even doing it a bit out of guilt. He's not interested in his "friend's" hobby, or wants to help him. He's doing it out of obligation. That's not a "bad" thing per-say; helping someone just because you can is a kind thing to be able to do. But it's... It's not a friendship. Not really.
