I believe it's more that people seek what is normal for them rather than a question of a persons beliefs, but yeah that's basically the same thing.

But in this case the first instinct of a human should be and inevitably is to seek security, stable food, health, housing, the requirements of life.
And I do not believe hes accomplished that at all seeing as how hes essentially a prisoner of a faction of non humans on the brink of war.
Where does he get the comfort and confidence to start trying to "right wrongs".
Since it's not logical but something that commonly happens in manga, calling it a trope shouldn't be wrong right.
