I think it's best to think of it all as setup for the rugpull of her finding out almost immediately after all that effort. Sort of a "no plan survives contact with the enemy" Aesop.

Or view it as a setup to show how sensitive this topic was to him and the scale of impact it was to him for it to be revealed this way.
