That really depends on how faithful to the established logic the author wants to be, I guess. Logically, you're right because the very first contract gem should have been able to immediately place him under the effect that makes him immune to external influences like the fox illusions since we have no evidence to the contrary.

But in that case, it's also strange that he didn't notice any of the foxes anywhere until later, when he wakes up already back at school because he gave himself an order to get there and it activated even before he woke up. They didn't even show us anything between his parting with the childhood friend and waking up, but it's strange is he never saw a single one between daylight hours of one day, and the early morning of the next.

There's a bit of a hole there, and it could be filled with a number of explanations. For instance, his almost third party control over himself wasn't fully activated right away. That could allow for both a scenario where even the childhood friend had already been replaced but he didn't see it then, or one where even if she hadn't he still wouldn't have noticed anything else on his way home.
